As a professional musician, music teacher, and homeschooling dad, Dr. John Owens is passionate about the value of music learning in and out of the home. Professionally, he serves as the music subject matter expert for the Department of Defense Educational Activity and taught music at Lake Michigan College, Kent State University, Coconino Community College, Page High School, and St. Augustine High School. John has also worked as a music teacher supervisor for Oberlin College and curriculum consultant for the non-profit Little Kids Rock. As a musician, John was a drummer for the US Army Band and Disneyland. His presentations and publications focus on informal music learning and music education philosophy. His Ph.D. and master's degrees in music are from Kent State University, and his BA in music is from Cal State San Bernardino.
